In this guide, we will create an 802.1Q Trunk between a Vigor3220 and DrayTek VigorSwitch G1280 based on the following network topology.

Central Switch Management will be used to simplify the configuration process.

This configuration method can be used with other DrayTek routers supporting Central Switch Management.

Vigor3220 LAN configuration

Step 1 Configure VLANS

Go to LAN >> VLAN Configuration menu

  • Select Enable
  • Assign VLANs to LAN subnet and VLAN tag.
  • Select “Permit untagged device in P1 to access router”.
  • Click OK to save.

Step 2 Configure LANS

  • Go to LAN >> General Setup
  • Enable Required LANS

  • Configure required IP subnet and DHCP settings.
  • Click OK to save.

 

Configure Inter-LAN Routing

  • Enable routing between LAN 1 and LAN 2 by selecting the intersection of LAN 1 and LAN 2 in the matrix.
  • Click OK to save.

 

Central Switch Management Configuration

For this configuration leave the VigorSwitch management VLAN at default setting (VLAN 1)

 

Step 1: Discover VigorSwitch

Go to Central Management >> External Device menu

  • Select External Device Auto Discovery
  • Click OK to save
  • Wait a few minutes and you will see the VigorSwitch appear in the list.

 

Step 2: Go to Central Management >> Switch >> Status menu.

  • The discovered VigorSwitch will appear in the New Switch List
  • Click on Add to add this switch to the main table.
  • The switch name can be changed if required by selecting the device under “Switch Name” and modifying the name.

Step 2: Configure VLANS on each VigorSwitch

Go to Central Management >> Switch >> Status menu

  • Click on switch name

  • In the Central Management >> Switch >> Profile menu, Click on VLAN tab
  • The VLAN configuration table will now be displayed.

Ports GE1 – GE3: 802.1Q VLAN trunk

Ports GE4 – GE24: VLAN0 (Untagged)

  • Click on G1280-1 in switch name column
  • Click on VLAN tab
  • Deselect VLAN0 for all ports
  • Select VLAN0 for ports GE4 – GE24
  • Select “Remove Tag (PVID)” for ports GE4 – GE24
  • Click on Save to save the settings
  • Click on Send to Device” to upload the configuration to the VigorSwitch.

Go to Central Management >> Switch >> Status menu

  • Click on G1280-2 in switch name column
  • Click on VLAN tab
  • Deselect VLAN0 for all ports
  • Select VLAN1 for ports GE2 – GE24
  • Select “Remove Tag (PVID)” for ports GE2 – GE24
  • Click on Save to save the settings
  • Click on Send to Device” to upload the configuration to the VigorSwitch.

Ports GE1: 802.1Q VLAN trunk

Ports GE2 – GE8: VLAN1 (tagged)

Ports GE9 – GE16: VLAN2 (tagged)

Ports GE17 – GE24: VLAN3 (tagged)

Go to Central Management >> Switch >> Status menu

  • Click on G1280-3 in switch name column
  • Deselect VLAN0 for all ports
  • Select VLAN1 for ports GE2 – GE8
  • Select VLAN2 for ports GE9 – GE16
  • Select VLAN1 for ports GE17 – GE24
  • Select “Remove Tag (PVID)” for ports GE2 – GE24
  • Click on Save to save the settings
  • Click on Send to Device” to upload the configuration to the VigorSwitch.

Checking VigorSwitch VLAN configuration

Once configuration is complete, you can log into each VigorSwitch to check that correct settings are enabled.

In the VigorSwitch go to Switch LAN>>VLAN Management>> Interface Settings menu.

You should see the VLAN settings corresponding to the Central Switch Management settings.

Testing VigorSwitch VLAN configuration

Connect your PC to each LAN port on each switch to confirm correct IP subnet is allocated.

Test with Ping to the Internet to verify connectivity.

Test inter-LAN routing by running ping test to IP addresses on other VLANS. should have connectivity between LAN 1 and LAN 2 but LAN 3 and LAN 4 should only be able to access Internet and no access to LAN 1 or LAN 2.
