Q. Can I use a VoIP or SIP device if I don’t have a VoIP model Router?

You certainly can! There are two techniques which can be used, and your DrayTek router supports both of them.

STUN server method is the simplest, but requires that your VoIP device supports use of a STUN server. See your VoIP device’s instructions for details on how to configure for a STUN server. For Vigor router configuration see “STUN Server VOIP Configuration on Vigor Router

Open Ports method requires you to open TCP port 5060 (for SIP communication), and possibly a range of UDP ports (for RTP).  For more information, please see FAQs for instructions for Opening / Forwarding Ports.


Q. Can I have more than one VoIP Device?

If you are using the Open Ports method, you can only have port 5060 forwarded to one LAN device. You can use a different public port (e.g. 5061) forwarded to an additional VoIP device – but this will require that your VoIP Provider’s SIP server accepts non-standard ports.

The STUN Server method supports multiple VoIP devices on your LAN. All can be working independently.


Q. How to configure my DrayTek Vigor router to use VoIP ?

The latest firmware for Vigor routers support STUN. If your VOIP device supports STUN, then there is no change required to the router configuration.

If your VoIP device does not support STUN server, you will need to Open or Redirect the SIP port, and enable QoS (Quality of Service).

Step 1: Open or Redirect the SIP Port .

Note: If your DrayTek Vigor router is a ‘V’ model (i.e. has built-in VoIP FXS ports) then the built-in ports will also use SIP port 5060 by default, and will have priority over external devices using the same port. You will need to use different SIP Port for each device.

You can use either “NAT > Port Redirection” or “NAT > Open Ports” on your DrayTek router. For an explanation of the differences, please see What are the differences between Port Mapping, Open Ports and DMZ ?  The example shown below uses the “Open Ports” method.

      1. On the router configurator’s “NAT > Open Ports” page, click on an index number with no details next to it.
      2. Tick the “Enable Open Ports” box
      3. Enter a description in the “Comment” field (e.g. VoIP phone)
      4. Enter the IP Address of the VoIP device (IP Phone, ATA device or PC running softphone) in the “Local Computer” field.
      5. For entry 1., select “UDP” for the Protocol, and “5060” for both “Start Port” and “End Port” fields. The page should look like:
