Vigor wireless routers support 802.11b and 802.11g as well as 802.11n on the later models. There are 13 channels that are allocated within the 2.4 Ghz band. Each channel uses 30Mhz bandwidth and each are 5 Mhz apart. So in the 2.4 Ghz band which covers the frequency range from 2.4GHz to 2.483 GHz there are only 3 non-overlapping channels. These are channels 1, 6 and 11.

Installing Multiple Wireless Routers or Access Points

To ensure that you will get the best performance from the Wireless routers (or Access Points) situated close to each other you will need to ensure that don’t have overlapping channels. You will need to configure each Wireless router (or Access Point) to be at least five channels apart from each another. A simple rule to follow is to configure each device to use either channel 1, 6, or 11 as these are the non-overlapping channels.

For larger wireless LANs you will need to do some up-front planning. You can use a drawing to identify the position of each wireless router or access point in relation to each other and assign a channel for each unit. When installing a wireless network on multiple floors in a building, you will have to think three-dimensionally to ensure that you do not get vertically overlapping channels between floors.

The diagram below show how to position access points in relation to each other on one floor so that you do not get overlapping channels.


Note: The exception to assigning non-overlapping channels is when a wireless network is being extended using WDS. In this type of installation you will need to use the same channel on all attached devices
